چکیده

This paper presents a tidally averaged model that approximates the long-term mixing processes of dissolved matter in tidal waters. The averaged transport model is based on a stochastic particle model. Because formal averaging techniques are used, the asymptotic validity of the approximation can be proven under the restriction that the diiusion coeecient is small. Numerical implementation of the averaging procedure results in a numerical eld of Lagrangian residual ow velocities and an-isotropic diiusion tensors. These diiusion tensors contain the main tidal dispersive processes. The Lagrangian residual ow-eld and the diiu-sion tensor eld are the parameters that determine the tidally averaged stochastic transport model. The averaging procedure is applied to a model of the Dutch Coastal zone. Results of simulations with the tidally averaged model are compared with those of the tidal model. This comparison shows that the results of the averaged computer model are accurate while, at the same time, the computation time is reduced with an order of magnitude.

Suspended sediment fluxes at an intertidal flat: The shifting influence of wave, wind, tidal, and freshwater forcing

Using in situ, continuous, high frequency (8–16Hz) measurements of velocity, suspended sediment concentration (SSC), and salinity, we investigate the factors affecting near-bed sediment flux during and after a meteorological event (cold front) on an intertidal flat in central San Francisco Bay. Hydrodynamic forcing occurs over many frequency bands including wind wave, ocean swell, seiching (500...

Numerical investigation of effective harbor geometry parameters on sedimentation inside square harbors

Sedimentation is one of the most important problems in harbors that results in considerable economic costs. Harbor planforms affects the flow pattern in the harbor basin and consequently, plays an important role in sediment transport and sedimentation. In the present study, a two dimensional depth-averaged hydrodynamic and sediment transport model has been developed to investigate the effect of...

Size exclusion during particle suspension transport in porous media: stochastic and averaged equations

A population balance model is formulated for transport of stable particulate suspensions in porous media. Equations for particle and pore size distributions were derived from the stochastic Master equation. The model accounts for particle flow reduction due to restriction for large particles to move through small pores. An analytical solution for low particle concentration is obtained for gener...

Estuarine Adjustment

Subtidal adjustment of estuarine salinity and circulation to changing river flow or tidal mixing is explored using a simplified numerical model. The model employs tidally averaged, width-averaged physics, following Hansen and Rattray, extended to include 1) time dependence, 2) tidally averaged mixing parameterizations, and 3) arbitrary variation of channel depth and width. By linearizing the vo...

Toward a Unified Theory of Tidally-Averaged Estuarine Salinity Structure

Equations are developed for the tidally-averaged, width-averaged estuarine salinity and circulation in a rectangular estuary. Width and depth may vary along the length of the channel, as may coefficients of vertical turbulent mixing and along channel diffusion. The system is reduced to a single first-order, nonlinear, ordinary differential equation governing the section-averaged salinity. A tec...
